What is Advanced Certified Interconnect Designer (CID+)?

The C.I.D. designation is an important recognition of a designer's accomplishments. Yet with the industry changing at an everfaster pace, continuing education becomes necessary to maintain a designer's effectiveness and marketability. That's why the IPC Designers Council has introduced the Advanced PCB Designers Preparation Workshop and Examination. The Advanced Module covers forty key objectives beyond the CID. Participants who successfully complete the exam are awarded the CID+ designation.

The Advanced Certification is open to anyone possessing a valid CID credential. It is recommended for designers with at least three to five years of experience designing PCBs. The format is similar to the CID course, where you will purchase a CID+ Workshop/Exam and do self-study. On the designated Workshop/Exam date to attend the two-day workshop with the exam administered on-site on the third day.

Why Certify?

In a business climate where work projects grow in complexity and responsibilities are constantly expanding, certification stands as a clear testimony to your qualifications, your knowledge, and your skills. Printed circuit board designers deserve the benefits and recognition of certification. Industry trends – such as outsourcing and concurrent engineering – are elevating the importance of the designer. IPC Designer and Advanced Designer Certifications are powerful tools in promoting your role to everyone involved in the production of printed circuit boards and assemblies.

What to Know and How to Study?

The program assesses a designer's knowledge of how to transform a schematic into a reliable rigid PCB design, which can be easily manufactured, assembled and tested. The IPC Designers Council recognizes that the most effective designers must have a solid foundation in PCB fabrication and assembly. The certification test is based on several critical IPC documents that link design principles to the end product use of the printed wiring assembly.

The workshop training provides an in-depth view of the principles contained in the examination and is strongly recommended for anyone interested in obtaining the certification. The two-hour examination is in a multiple choice format. Answer choices are all plausible, therefore, you must indicate the most correct answer. Occasionally, you must indicate the two most correct answers or identify certain characteristics from a diagram. The examination is graded and a review of the test items is conducted on-site.

Certificates are sent, via standard mail, 6-8 weeks after exam is taken and passed. All certificates are issued by IPC, US.

What about Registration and Workshop/Exam Information?

The two-day workshop portion of the course will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 5:00 pm each day. The exam will be administered in the morning on the final day, with a review of the test following lunch and concluding by 3:00 pm.

Advance registration is necessary for all Designer Certification Training and Testing Workshops. Individuals must register at least one month in advance of the course date in order to receive the materials prior to the workshop. Cancellations for workshop registrations will not be refunded once materials have shipped, however, participants may transfer to another workshop date by contacting SHRDC.
