3. SHRDC 15th Anniversary Highlights ~ 04-02-2007

SHRDC celebrated its 15th Anniversary on 3rd February 2007 at the Kelab Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah at Shah Alam.

Attended by slightly over 200 participants that consists of clients, vendors, partners, instructors and staff

Present were SHRDC chairman• Mr Tham Wai Keong and his wife, Vice Chairman•E- Wakamatsu, Director-Industry Support of MIDA •En Wahab Hamid and his wife, Tuan Hj Rusnan, Deputy Chief Executive of the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad and many more

As usual, SHRDCs’ dinner was a difference. Besides entertainment, the highlight of the show was the SHRDC Domino Race. Coincidently, it is also SHRDC latest team building product.

The audience was divided into 3 groups whereby we have 1 team being the “intellectual team”, the second group, being the “dainty little fingers” and the last group being the “Runners”. The first group will go through a strategic mind game. This game is from an ancient Chinese warzone period whereby the participants need to strategize and plans it moves. The second group, mainly consisted of women was left to build the domino pieces. They are requested to put about 300 pieces of Dominos into shapes of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13. The numbers also signified the number of years SHRDC was established.

The last group was the runners and their role is to search for clues to bring back Domino pieces to the “ground” and to be built. Lastly, once all the pieces were built, the chairman pushed the initial domino piece and one by one; pieces of domino fell and ended with SHRDC logo at the centre. As the domino fell, the audience cheered and waited anxiously and lastly, to mark our 15th anniversary celebration, party pops and CNY crackers were used.

6. Become a Thinking Organization ~ 08-03-2007

By Lynda Curtin, The Opportunity Thinker

A thinking organization supports employees with powerful process tools designed to tap into the thinking power of its employees. These process tools provide a common set of frameworks and language for the necessary thinking and discussions employees need to engage in, in order to arrive at thoroughly thought out business solutions. For example, if a team needs to make a decision, they would all follow the same decision making process. It wouldn't matter what part of the organization they work in, they would all use the same decision making tool. This saves enormous amounts of time and puts a team on the same page at the same time.

If the employees at your company are not using common process tools to manage projects, make decisions, solve problems, resolve concerns, conduct opportunity searches, or think creatively, as a training professional, you can use your expertise and influence to lay the foundation to build and support a thinking organization - build core thinking competencies and create a common language that supports "out-thinking" the competition to boost bottom-line results.

Skill in these process thinking tools is required to consistently beat the competition, profitably:

Process Thinking Tools - a mix of analytic, critical, rational and creative thinking tools

  • Project Management
  • Problem Solving
  • Decision Making
  • Opportunity Searching
  • Creative & Innovative

Select the best methodology for each of these skills and provide the very best skill development training and follow-up support your money can buy.

To ensure success:

  • Market the practical, job relevant aspect of each tool. Always include job application time
  • Be consistent. Stick with them. Treat them as untouchable, no matter what
  • Develop internal process facilitators and market their services. Reinforce the use of the tools
  • Publish application success stories
  • Publish a promise to never cancel these classes. Send a strong signal of commitment. Set yourself up for great word of mouth

Master this type of relevant, skill based training focused on the needs of the business, and you will develop thankful employees who will do your marketing for you. There is nothing stronger than word of mouth.

This strategy sets up employees to "out-think-the-competition, profitably," which is the only reason they have jobs. Perhaps it's time to become a thinking organization.

11. INSEP Student Interview by Nancy Ai ~ 12-03-2007

Nancy Ai Reang is a recent graduate of SHRDC’s first batch of INSEP - Semiconductor Chip Packaging course.  She now works as an Engineer for Package Analysis and Design Centre at the United Test and Assembly Centre Ltd, an established and fast expanding semiconductor packaging company.

SHRDC: Hi Nancy, can you tell us when and why did you join this program called INSEP SCP?

Nancy:  I joined this new program in Dec 2006, because I had not found a job, and thought that it is good to have training before applying for the next job.  At the same time, the course is sponsored by government, which means that I don’t have to pay the fees and also given a monthly allowance.

SHRDC:  Can you tell us briefly about your current job?

Nancy: This is design job using Cadence APD (Allegro Package Designer).  I am currently working on substrate type, PPGA (Plastic Pin Grid Array), modules and memory card. I am also in charge of creating bonding diagrams for production.

SHRDC: How did you manage to find this job?

Nancy:  It was through a recommendation by SHRDC staff through contacts with the             semiconductor industry & vendor.  The company had a good relationship with the industry.

SHRDC: Does your supervisor have any comments about your ability and work performance?

Nancy:  So far, they just say its ok “lah” and can do the work, no need to have so much training in the company.

SHRDC: In your opinion, how does the course in SHRDC benefit you?

Nancy: It does help a lot, especially in building up confidence, knowledge and skills.

SHRDC: Do you have any feedback or recommendations for improvement?

Nancy:  I think SHRDC need to include AUTOCAD for the training.  The bonding diagram and its relationship to Cadence output to AUTOCAD is quite important.  Maybe if SHRDC can make the Cadence APD training longer instead of two weeks.  Two weeks is a little too short and more time would be better for practice and skills level.

SHRDC: What would you like to share with your juniors in SCP?

Nancy: This is a good choice and very good pay.  No regrets!

SHRDC: Thank you and hope to hear good news from you again.

Nancy: OK, thank you and good bye.

A word from Nancy’s supervisor

An email extract dated 2 Feb 2007 by Mr C.K. Wong:

“It had been almost 6 months since Nancy Ai Reang had joined UTAC. So far, we are very satisfied with her performance.  Thanks to the INSEP program which provided her the relevant skill set for her current job scope.”

12. WTTP Student Testimony by Kamarul Azwan ~ 12-03-2007

I came across a program call WTTP in the newspaper and I decided to join the      program. When I attended the preview, I was surprised to learn that the course program is 100% subsidized by government and I can also get a monthly allowance for studying at SHRDC.

At first, I was not sure if I could get into the program because of my poor academic results. However SHRDC assured me that as long I am willing to learn, and be hard-working, I will be able to pass the subjects. I was worried as courses were mainly in English. However due to the instructors care and  understanding, the instructors gladly taught bi-lingual and gave lots of practical work such as working with the machines, trouble-shooting with PLCs boards, etc

After 9 months, not only I felt I gained new insights, I also became responsible

My On-The-Job (Industrial Attachment) was with DP Controls Sdn Bhd and I became excited when they were satisfied with my performance and offered me full time.

Thank you SHRDC for the instructors and the industries connections.

17. NEW C.I.D! ~ 21-03-2007

Congratulations to Ms Cheah Soo Lan, Senior Technical Specialist- Microsystems as she has been certified as a “Certified Interconnect Designer”. Soo Lan went for her certification in US recently.

CID is a program that assesses a designer's knowledge of how to transform a schematic into a reliable rigid PCB design, which can be easily manufactured, assembled and tested. The IPC Designers Council recognizes that the most effective designers must have a solid foundation in PCB fabrication and assembly. The certification test is based on several critical IPC documents that link design principles to the end product use of the printed circuit assembly. Designers may purchase study materials and prepare on their own or enroll in a two-day IPC Designer Certification Preparation workshop. All designer certification testing is done on-site at a workshop location the day after a course concludes. Individuals who do not feel prepared to take the test immediately after the training may choose to keep their exam voucher and take the test at a later date. The workshop training provides an in-depth view of the principles contained in the examination and is strongly recommended for anyone interested in obtaining the certification.
