Introduction

SHRDC started the ICT courses to meet the industry demand for competent personnel. A crucial trigger for the demand of human resource with high-end and niche ICT skills was Multimedia Super Corridor.

As a standard, SHRDC’s courses are developed on the basis of curricular appropriation as advised by the industries. To make sure they match the world class benchmark the design and development are carried out in collaboration with established partner institutions around the world. The strategy applies to all of the ICT courses at SHRDC. The overseas partners for the current ICT courses are FeaBhas (UK) – real time embedded systems; Boxhill College, Australia – programming, database, internet technologies and e-commerce; Motorola University – software engineering; and SSA Global / Solidcamp – enterprise resource planning. Hence, the ICT courses mark a high level of customization to meet the occupational needs of the industries. Experience in the past years has shown that they equip participants with the necessary competencies that make them aptly employable by the industries.

The ICT courses at SHRDC are offered for all levels of occupational groups including line operators, administrators, engineers and managers.

Moreover, all of the courses at SHRDC are competency-based that focuses on capability building. The participants deal with real world or workplace situations and applications and engage in hands-on learning. The courses are conducted by a pool of trainers who have been identified for related work experience, expertise and appropriate educational background. Before they venture into their instructional responsibilities, they are trained in-house on the principles and methodology of competency-based instruction.

The facilitation of the learning sessions as well is closely monitored. The class sizes are controlled so that every participant has access to a computer and other necessary equipment at the same time equitable chance of participation. Participants’ learning is also augmented through assessment activities and projects that require them to demonstrate the newly acquired capabilities.
